As a not-for-profit law firm, ELC represents the public interest in environmental and land use matters. In particular, the ELC works to restore the Everglades and the Keys and to prevent harmful growth from affecting the ecosystems of south Florida. Charting Florida's Future The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has released Being Drought Smart, a report identifying water use efficiency measures that can help in the current drought and also better prepare the state for future drought situations. The report provides recommendations for agricultural operations; public water supply; and commercial and industrial practices and programs. The Department has also released Tapping New Sources: Meeting 2025 Water Supply Needs. The annual report summarizes the progress of the water management districts’ regional water supply plans and the development of alternative water sources. It provides information on the trends statewide and in Florida’s five water management districts. Copies of both reports are available on-line:
Century Commission Second Annual Report: Recently released, this January 2008 report was submitted to the governor and legislature and contains recommendations and information about managing growth in Florida.

Sustaining Rural Florida
1000 Friends of Florida has released a study identifying strategies to stem the dramatic loss of Florida's rural lands over the next 50 years. Working to Sustain Florida's Rural and Natural Lands: A Call to Action, is a follow-up to the group's eye-opening report, Florida 2060, which included the projection that the amount of urbanized land in the State of Florida will double by 2060, based on current development patterns.
